Gabriel ZAKUANI | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A highly experienced defender who had made over 400 Football League appearances and represented the Democratic Republic of Congo at three Africa Cup of Nations before joining Swindon Town on a free transfer in October 2019 as cover for injured captain Dion Conroy. A short-term solution to the Town's injury problems in defence, Zakuani didn’t really suit Richie Wellens’ style of play and his arrival in the first team coincided with one of Swindon’s poorest streak of results -with league losses against Bradford City and Crewe Alexandra plus the 3-0 loss and 1-1 draw in the double-header against Plymouth Argyle in Football League Trophy and League Two respectively. By November, Zakuani had lost his place in the side with Wellens preferring Mathieu Baudry and Zeki Fryers as the centre-back pairing. He returned to the starting line-up for the 4-0 Boxing Day victory over Cambridge United before making his final appearance away at Port Vale days later. Zakuani was released when his short-term contract ended in January 2020, and he later signed for Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League. PLAYING RECORD:
