Tom SMITH | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A ginger haired midfielder, Swindon born Tom Smith came through the club’s academy and made his debut in April 2015 as a substitute, when a below strength Swindon rested players for a game at Preston having secured their place in the League One playoffs. His next league appearance in September, proved to be the high point. 17-year-old Smith was brought on as a half-time substitute at Crewe and would score an equaliser from 20 yards as Town won 3-1. Come the 2016/17 season Smith featured in the first-team squad for the first part of the season, starting four league games, before being loaned out to Lee Power’s Waterford. After relegation into League Two, Smith started what proved to be his last game for Swindon, when they were beaten 3-2 at Norwich in the League Cup. A sequence of loan spells at National League South Bath followed. Smith was scoring regularly, and fans hoped that he might be able to have an impact on his return. But with his contract running out, his once real chance to show then manager Phil Brown what he could do was in a reserve game at the end of the season against an MK Dons side made up largely of trialists and youth teamers. Although Swindon scored eight goals, he failed to convince Brown he was worth a new deal, and Smith was released, going on to join Cheltenham. PLAYING RECORD:
