Martin SMITH | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Midfielder Smith spent a largely forgettable period at Town during the largely forgettable 2018/19 season. A graduate of Sunderland’s youth academy, he was playing for Coleraine in Northern Ireland before joining Town on the recommendation of assistant manager Neil McDonald. Under the management of Phil Brown, he started the season as a first choice in midfield and made all of his eight starts for Town before early November - perhaps the highlight being a shot from the halfway line in the League Cup against Forest Green Rovers that hit the woodwork. After Brown departed, Smith more or less disappeared. He made one substitute appearance in Richie Wellens’ first game in charge and then spent the next ten games as an unused substitute, before being left out of the matchday squad for the rest of the season and released at the end of it. After being released by Swindon, he joined Salford City and then Chesterfield, making few appearances for either. PLAYING RECORD:
