Tyler REID

While Tyler Reid arrived at Swindon with limited games played under his belt, his CV was formidable - Arsenal, Manchester United and Swansea City had all contributed to his development. However, on signing for Town in June 2019, the only minutes this powerfully built right back had earned were on a loan at Newport County in League Two in 2017/18.

So it was as a prospect, rather than the finished article, that manager Richie Wellens signed him on his release from Swansea. However, with Rob Hunt yet to arrive, it was Reid who with seemed to be the replacement for out-of-contract Kyle Knoyle.

"I first came across Tyler when he was around 18 - I went into Manchester United to work under Paul McGuinness, who has got a great reputation for producing young players, and Tyler was one that we looked at and thought had real potential", reflected Wellens.

Whatever Reid’s early potential it remained unrealised at Town, despite numerous pre-season appearances. Instead the versatile Hunt took his place, so Reid’s lone league start came in a draw at Cheltenham Town - a game remarkable more for Michael Doughty’s sending off and Eoin Doyle’s two goals than Reid’s performance. "... often caught out in possession and arguably at fault for both goals" was the Adver’s less than enraptured verdict of his debut.

And that was almost that for Reid at Swindon - and never again was he to start a league game under Wellens. Sporadic substitute spots was as good as it got before a loan move to non-league Wrexham in November - while reportedly troubled by injury while at the Racecourse Ground, Reid benefited from Swindon’s own mounting list of knocks to once more grace the County Ground bench, except that now with Hunt on the left flank, he was behind returning hero Paul Caddis.

As Town’s 2019/20 season moved towards its truncated conclusion, Reid slipped further from the first team, and further from most fans’ thoughts. His release after just one year of his initial two-year contract was little surprise, and neither was his near immediate signing by National League side Woking or their club statement mentioning Reid’s formidable academy past.
