Matt PALMER | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Born in Derby, Palmer began his career at Burton Albion before moving to Rotherham. Town boss Richie Wellens signed the midfielder on 31st January 2020 on a 18 month deal following the termination of his Rotherham contract. Palmer only managed one appearance in his first season, coming on as a late substitute against Scunthorpe in March 2020. Wellens did hint that there was more playing time to come for Palmer in the later stages of the season, however with the season cut short due to a global coronavirus pandemic. these appearances failed to materialise. The 2020/21 season again saw Palmer struggling for game time. He did however score his first goal for the club against West Brom Under 23s in the EFL Trophy. Shortly afterwards, Palmer was sent on loan to Wigan until January. Initially, Palmer’s manager at Wigan was John Sheridan, who he was to link up with again upon his return to the County Ground - and he became far more of a regular in the Town starting eleven upon his return. His return to the Town starting eleven against Ipswich in January was competent, but understandably a little overshadowed by Scott Twine’s wonder strike, Diallang Jaiyesimi’s brace and Dom Thompson’s debut. He would remain a regular presence in Town’s midfield throughout the remainder of the season without ever really impressing. Palmer’s ability to cross and pass from corners and free kicks impressed, but confusingly he never seemed to have quite the same ability in open play. Palmer was released at the end of his contract upon the conclusion of the 2020/21 season. PLAYING RECORD:
