Néstor LORENZO | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
After a deal with Nottingham Forest fell through at the last minute, Ossie Ardiles brought his fellow countryman Lorenzo to the club, originally on a loan deal from Italian club Bari. He made his debut on 10th November 1990, scoring the first goal in a 3-0 win over Portsmouth at the County Ground. The arrival of Lorenzo was a big coup for the club - he signed just over four months after appearing in the 1990 World Cup Final for Argentina. Though he was a bit of a hot-head (Lorenzo was one of the players who could be seen shoving the referee in that Final, after Argentina had players sent off), he seemed to settle in to the team reasonably well - prompting Ardiles to pay £160,000 (400 million lira) for his services a month later. Unfortunately, Lorenzo's family struggled to settle in the area, and, when Glenn Hoddle took over the reins at the end of that season, he hardly featured. When he did play, Hoddle often utilised him in a unsuitable midfield position. After just over a year and a half at Swindon, he left the club at the end of the 1991/1992 season - returning to Argentina at the end of his contract. PLAYING RECORD:
