Very few of Ben Chorley’s 2021/22 signings were misses, but Alex Gilbert may not look back on his time in SN1 with any great fondness. A Republic of Ireland U21 left winger, Gilbert had spent time in the West Brom academy before joining Brentford, and made the loan switch to Town on deadline day in August 2021, his first loan move having not yet played a minute of professional football. He made a bright debut off the bench at Stevenage in September as Town grabbed a last minute equaliser, and then had a run of five starts from Arsenal U21 in the Papa Johns through to Bristol Rovers away at the start of October. He was substituted in the second half of all five games, and then went away to join up with the Republic of Ireland U21 squad. The international break seemed to disrupt Gilbert’s season, and he made only one more league start after returning before being recalled at the start of January. PLAYING RECORD:
