Josh DAVISON | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Signed on loan from Charlton Athletic towards the end of January 2022, Swindon became the ninth club of Davison’s career despite him being only 22 years old. Having begun his career at Peterborough United, Davison dropped into non-league with Enfield Town before joining the Addicks in 2019 and then spent time on loan at Woking and Forest Green Rovers before Town. Signed as a direct replacement for the recalled Tyreece Simpson, Davison was essentially undroppable from day one as the only natural centre-forward in Ben Garner’s squad. He started every game for the rest of the season, and finished all but five of those games. His hard work and willingness to put himself about physically improved the players around him, and despite his occasional technical deficiencies, and perhaps carrying a knock for a period, it was clear that he was central to Town’s style of play. His personal goal return of 9 in 20 regular season games was more than satisfactory, putting him one goal ahead of Harry McKirdy during the period and contributing braces against Scunthorpe and Harrogate as Town pushed for a play-off place that they would eventually claim with four wins in the final four games of the season. Unfortunately, the play-off campaign ended in defeat and was not personally successful for Davison either - the striker missing a one-on-one opportunity that would have put the Town 3-0 up in the first leg against Port Vale, before seeing his penalty saved in the shootout that would have sealed a place at Wembley.
