Leigh BEDWELL

After joining the club as an eight year-old, Bedwell was given a first team squad number at the tender age of seventeen - acting as back-up to deputy Phil Smith, when first choice keeper Mattia Lanzano and third choice Mark Scott were both injured at the start of the 2011/12 season. The arrival of Wes Foderingham prevented Bedwell from keeping his place in the starting sixteen - but at the end of the season, though Smith, Lanzano and Scott were all released, Bedwell was offered his first professional contract, and he signed a one-year deal.

Though Town boss Paolo di Canio hinted that he would bring in another keeper to challenge Foderingham, it was Bedwell who remained as the second choice keeper - and he was to make his professional debut in bizarre circumstances in September 2012 - di Canio sensationally bringing the youngster on as a substitute after just 21 minutes with the Town 2-0 down at Preston, after taking exception to Foderingham’s “arrogance” - accusing the goalkeeper of moaning at other players for mistakes that were down to him. Though the Swindon Advertiser described Bedwell as having dealt with the situation with “maturity that belied his tender years”, the eighteen year-old was unable to prevent Swindon succumbing to a 4-1 defeat - and though di Canio threatened to axe Foderingham if he didn’t apologise, he was reinstated after clear-the-air talks with the Town boss, and Bedwell remained on the bench for the rest of the season - Foderingham being named in the League One Team of the Year at the end of the campaign.
