Originally formed in 1919 as a works team of miners, the finest hour of Jiul Petrosani came in 1974, when despite only escaping relegation from the Romanian Divizia A on goal difference, they won the Romanian cup, beating Politehnica Timisoara 4-2 in the final. In 2006/07, they finished bottom of the Romanian top flight (now named Liga 1).
Jiul Petrosani have been involved in two bizarre transfers - in 1998, they sold defender Liviu Baicea to UT Arad for a fee of ten footballs and a set of kit - and they also sold midfielder Ion Radu for two tons of beef and pork!
