A hybrid of a number of different teams, the current Dagenham and Redbridge club was formed in 1992, after a merger of Dagenham FC with Redbridge Forest. Redbridge Forest were previously known as Leytonstone-Ilford - a merger of the two clubs Leytonstone and Ilford, which changed its name in 1989, shortly after absorbing another side, Walthamstow Avenue. Since then, both the Ilford and Walthamstow Avenue clubs have been reformed - and Ilford, who the Town met on five occasions before the War, have fought through the courts to reclaim the history of the old club (see Ilford).

Ilford excepted, of all the other clubs, the Town have met just one of them - after being drawn away to Dagenham in the 1983/84 FA Cup First Round. After drawing the first match 0-0 at Victoria Road, Swindon were expected to see off their non-league opponents in the replay. Instead though, despite a goal from Alan Mayes and Lou Macari playing in the Town's midfield, the Daggers held the Robins to a 1-1 draw, then scored again in extra time to humiliate the majority of the 3,745 fans in attendance.
